![]() ![]() Melee weapon attacks are a classification in DnD 5e that is SEPARATE from melee attacks with a weapon. However, for this build I don’t plan on multiclassing into Monk and instead plan on using the Unarmed Fighting Style from the UA Class Feature Variants. In addition, Improved Divine Smite is another can of worms, because if you can in fact smite with an unarmed strike, you can’t benefit from the Improved version because it specifies that you must make an attack with a melee weapon.ĮDIT: I should make a note because a lot of comments reference a Monk multiclass because the sage advice from 2017 does as well. But in an earlier 2017 Sage Advice, Crawford gives the okay. But in an early 2019 Sage Advice, Jeremy Crawford states that you can’t Divine Smite without a weapon. However, I’ve found a lot of conflicting information and want a clear answer.įirst, Divine Smite RAW states that you can smite “when you hit a a creature with a melee weapon attack,” and since an unarmed strike counts as a melee weapon attack, this should work. So I’ve always loved the idea of a Paladin who smites their enemies with their fists.
